Find the perfect solution based on your usage, capacity and energy efficiency.
Now more than ever, it important to know how to choose the right water heater for your needs.
You are no longer limited to a one-size-fits-all solution that may not completely meet your
needs or that may not be as efficient as you like. When you learn how to buy a water heater of
the best quality and size for your needs, you can have the most energy-efficient water heater
without overbuying or getting a product that under-delivers.
Water heaters are one
of the most important appliances in any home, because every one looks forward to a warm bath
during winter seasons or even a regular warm bath is one of the most sought after respites
after a long and hard day of work. So, buying the best and most efficient water heater that
provides reliable hot water is a very important decision. Following are tips to consider when
buying a water heater:
When buying a water heater as a customer you will be faced with a wide number of water heater brands. So it becomes a difficult task to choose between so many options. All of us want to make a smart choice, so buy the water heater from a reputed company which has its own manufacturing unit. Choose the company which has been in the business for more than 50 years committed to providing customers with products of quality and reliability with continued efforts to innovate and improve on the existing products to suit the needs of the customers. The brand of the water heater is important to ensure a quality and reliable product.
In Ceramic heating element heat is transferred over a much larger surface area, which reduces the stress on heating element, lowers watts density/sq.cm and ensures less scale deposition on heating element.
Porcelain enamel tanks are widely used internationally and are approved for use in water heaters by BIS, IEC, DIN (German), UL (US) standards. In India, VENUS is the first manufacturer to start enameling with Dry Powder Enamel system which is superior to other types of coatings.
Choose a water heater that has the latest technology for long lasting performance. The water heater should have the following features:
Manufactured in a modern, automated plant using European Technology. Protects the tank from rust and corrosion.
Withstands temperatures upto 1000°C. Long lasting, even in hard water.
The table below will give an idea of the capacity to choose according to the usage.

To maximize your energy and for cost savings the water heater should be energy efficient. When choosing the water heater look out for the Star rating sticker and buy one which is 5 star rated. Star rating is a system initiated by BEE (Bureau of Energy Efficiency) India to determine the energy efficiency of consumer durables. Based on their efficiency the product is rated on a scale of 1-5 and indicated by stars. Higher the number of stars better is the energy efficiency. In water heaters energy savings is determined by how much of the heat generated by the heating element stays in the water in the inner tank. So ensure the water heater use high density PUF insulation that retains the heat generated by the heating element in the water stored in the inner tank, thus it reduces energy consumption.

Ensure that the water heater has protection against high temperature and pressure. The features of safety to look out for are the automatic Thermostat, thermal cutout and the Multifunction safety valve. These features gives the assurance of maximum safety as they ensure protection from overheating, dry heating and high pressure.
Before buying a water heater check the space available in the bathroom for fitting the water heater. Based on the space available look out for the heater which has Flexi Mount which offers flexible mounting options of vertical, horizontal and floor standing models. In some models you can get even left or right side opening options for fitting the inlet & outlet pipes which is ideal for high rise apartments.

When choosing a water heater choose a brand which has all the required certifications to assure a safe, reliable and quality product. Look out for the following certificates.
ISI certificate which ensures that the product conforms to the laid by the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS)
ISI certificate which ensures that the product conforms to the laid by the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS)
Additional certificates that will give an added advantage of safety are S mark and CE marking. The S mark certificate and CE marking demonstrate compliance with legal European electrical safety requirements. Thus the product will comply to international safety standards.
After you make the purchase your needs have to be understood and you have to be taken care of by the company. Ensure the company is supported by a wide marketing and distribution network, and have established a reputation for strong customer support. The company should have a dedicated Customer Care center to take care of the service complaints of the customer within 24 hours.
Suitable for pressure pumps and multi-storey buildings.
Backups Safety device Cuts off power at 90°C. Prevents overheating.
Acts as pressure release valve, non-return valve, expansion valve and vacuum release valve.
A Special device to enhance the corrosion protection of the tank by means of "Cathode Action".
3cm Extra Thick (PUF) Insulation keeps the water hot for much longer time and reduces energy consumption.
Precision Heating Made Easy with Adjustable Thermostats. Choose the exact warmth you need for any season.
ISI Certification By The Bureau Of Indian Standard. India's most ISI certified water heaters. Trust, Safety, Reliability.
5 Star rating for more energy savings.
When choosing a water heater, the capacity of the heater is the next decision to be made. The water heater should be sized correctly to properly fit its use. One that is undersized runs the risk of running out of water, while one that is oversized will waste energy. In order to select the optimal size to ensure sufficient hot water the following factors have to be considered:
First determine the number of people living in the house at present and how many might there be in the future.
In colder climates since it will take a longer time to heat water to the desired temperature. It will help to buy a larger capacity storage water heater to ensure sufficient hot water.
Knowing how the household uses hot water will help you make better choices about getting the best energy efficiency and value for money when selecting the size of your water heater.
The capacity will differ according to the place of installation. In kitchens where the hot water usage is minimal, a smaller capacity water heater will be ideal. But in bathrooms using shower panels or bath tubs will require much larger capacities.
The Quality of water contributes to the efficient operation of water heaters. Hard water is a very common problem for millions of households across the country. Water described as is high in dissolved minerals, specifically calcium and magnesium.
Hard water is a nuisance because of mineral buildup on fixtures which can be felt over a period of time. It contributes to inefficient and costly operation of water- using appliances. Thus, in water heaters the heated hard water forms a scale of calcium and magnesium minerals (lime scale deposits) on the walls and reduces the heat conductivity of heaters sometimes leading to its breakdown. Lime scale has been known to increase energy bills by up to 25%. The scale formed on the heating element reduces the heat transmission and causes early failure of the element.
Choose a water heater which has Hard water Protection. The water heater should have a
Porcelain Enamel Glass Lined Tank which provides:
1. Resistance to corrosion
2. Resistance to permanent scale deposition 3. Resistance to high temperature
In addition to the glass lined tank the heaters should be fitted with Porcelain Enamel glass lined element Assembly which has a protective enamel coating over the heating element housing which gives high corrosion resistance, reduces scale formation and ensures longer element life even in hard water areas. The glass lined element reduces scaling by 50% and increases heating efficiency.
To enhance hard water protection a Magnesium anode should also be fitted. The anode is used to protect any minute areas not covered by enamel lining. It acts as a sacrificial rod which takes the corrosion attack and extends the life of the tank.
Look out for the warranty offered by the company. All models should have a minimum of 2 years warranty for the product, 3 years warranty on the heating element and 5 years for the inner tank.
